Frequently Asked Questions
Why would I use Green Home Guide over getting an inspection?
Great question! A traditional inspection can be valuable, but it’s not always the best starting point. Here’s how our tool stacks up:
- Less intrusive – No one needs to step foot in your property.
- Faster turnaround – Get results in minutes, not weeks or months.
- More affordable – A fraction of the cost of a full survey.
- Tailored recommendations – We’ll compare over 1000 possible upgrade combinations based on your property and your goals so we can identify which improvements will deliver the best results.
It’s not a replacement for every inspection, but it’s a powerful first step for people who want clarity before committing time and money.
How does Green Home Guide make its calculations?
After inputting your address, Green Home Guide gathers hundreds of property-specific data points from trusted online sources and then builds an online “digital twin” of your property.
Our tool then models over 1000 possible combinations of home energy improvement measures (e.g. insulation, glazing, solar) against the “digital twin” of your property. We do this using a proprietary model developed by Green Home Guide that is aligned with industry and government approved assessment methodologies (RdSAP).
We then return a tailored Green Home Guide that identifies the best upgrade path, ensuring you get the most bang for your buck.
Does Green Home Guide provide financial advice?
No. Green Home Guide does not provide financial or investment advice.
We estimate costs, savings and potential payback periods to help you make informed decisions. In the future, we also plan to include the potential impact and eligibility of relevant government grants and loans.
However, the decision on implementing home energy improvements is ultimately yours to make.
How much will I save?
The amount you could save on energy costs depends very much on your property and goal. That is the beauty of Green Home Guide, we don’t churn out generic advice, but instead we tailor it specifically to you and your property.
While we can’t guarantee specific energy bill savings, one thing we can be confident about is that you will save hundreds of pounds compared to commissioning a traditional in-person inspection as a first step.
Do I have to be a property owner to use Green Home Guide?
Not at all. Green Home Guide is aimed at homeowners and landlords who want to improve their home’s energy efficiency. However, some home energy improvements are available to tenants. We recommend reviewing your rental contract and checking in with your landlord to see if you are allowed to make the changes proposed in youe Green Home Guide.
How does Green Home Guide estimate installation costs?
We estimate installation costs from the bottom up. This includes:
- Estimating the materials required for each measure and pricing them using current supplier data
- Estimating labour time and applying region-specific labour rates to reflect local costs
Whilst we try to make our installation costs reliable, they will never replace accurate quotes from installers who can visit the property.
We recommend you get at least three quotes from vetted installers before carrying out work.
Does Green Home Guide work on all different types of homes?
Yes. Green Home Guide aims to be able to model home energy improvements across a wide range of property types.
That’s the beauty of Green Home Guide. We know that what is suitable for a Victorian terrace is going to differ from what is suitable for a modern flat, and therefore we tailor the recommendations in your Green Home Guide accordingly.
Which countries does Green Home Guide currently work in?
Green Home Guide is currently only accessible for properties in England and Wales.
We are working on expanding this to Scotland and Northern Ireland shortly. If you have an immediate requirement for one of these regions, please contact info@greenhomeguide.co.uk and we’ll see how we can help.
What if I'm not happy with my Green Home Guide?
If you’re not satisfied with your Green Home Guide, we’d really like to understand why.
Please let us know where we can improve by emailing info@greenhomeguide.co.uk. Where possible, we may be able to support specific follow-up questions or refinements.
Why should I trust Green Home Guide?
At Green Home Guide, we pride ourselves on providing honest and tailored advice.
Green Home Guide was created to address a real problem: homeowners often receive biased advice from companies selling their own products or installations.
Our Green Home Guides are always fact-based, and to ensure this we have built one of the most sophisticated home energy improvement models available, aligned with industry- and government-approved assessment procedures (RdSAP).
We don’t sell installations or favour specific technologies. Our goal is simply to help you make better decisions.
Can I use this service for multiple properties?
Absolutely. If you manage a portfolio of properties, please email us at info@greenhomeguide.co.uk and we can provide information on bespoke portfolio services.
Alongside bundled Green Home Guides, we can provide portfolio-level insights and help you identify opportunities for economies of scale when working with installers.
Will this replace an EPC assessment?
No. Green Home Guide does not replace EPCs or any other statutory requirement.
It is designed to help you understand your options before committing to a formal assessment.
